Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise is in hair analysis, with many centers across the nation equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Currently, drug testing practices are increasingly favoring hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair analysis over urine testing. This method is utilized by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals undergoing probation. A major advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug usage up to 90 days with observed sample collection, making the process hard to falsify. Nonetheless, to detect drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests still provide the most reliable results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a crucial method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strands. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it offers an alcohol and drug detection window of up to about three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies whether the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to rule out drug usage in most samples, positive screens need confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Shows historical use data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
