In Harris, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides advanced hair follicle drug evaluations. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our centers, located nationwide, excel in these thorough assessments. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, tests are conducted using head or body hair to examine for drugs and ETG, with custom testing options also available.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer this over standard urine testing. Employers enforcing strict non-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation utilize this due to its extensive 90-day drug-use detection window. Despite its comprehensive reach, urine tests remain the preferred choice for identifying very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a protracted history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to three months for substances, including alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An optimal sample for testing and validation is a 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands, akin to the width of a #2 pencil, near the scalp, resulting in 100mg of hair. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and transport, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data tasks not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While this is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most cases, a positive screening result must be validated to be legally valid. Samples with positive results from Screening necessitate an additional confirmatory test.

For samples indicating a positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are retrieved from the hair at reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screening as one of the most complex methodologies.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to such confirmations, samples presumed positive are cleansed as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical context: It portrays a timeline of substance use over time rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: A 5-7 day period is needed for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Harris, WI, hair follicle testing triumphs over urine tests due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests provide information on recent substance use, hair follicle tests cover a broader timeframe, offering insights into longer-term behaviors. This advantage makes hair testing a preferred method for settings requiring stringent drug use evaluations.

The superiority of hair follicle testing lies in its capacity to provide an extensive detection window. This longer insight period gives employers and legal systems a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history, thereby enhancing decision-making capabilities compared to the limited timeframe of urine testing. Its reliability as a detection method further solidifies its preference in diverse situations.

Extended Detection Window

In Harris, WI, hair follicle assessments extend the capability to trace drug use up to 90 days, offering employers an all-encompassing perspective of an individual's substance history. This extended detection window surpasses that of traditional methods, ensuring that employers receive a thorough insight essential for making informed decisions about applicants or employees.

Employing hair follicle testing grants organizations a proactive approach in evaluating substance use history over a considerable period. This comprehensive window assists in identifying habitual patterns rather than fleeting usage, empowering employers to maintain a drug-free workplace with a detailed understanding of employees' or candidates' histories.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Harris, WI, significantly minimize the chance of sample tampering, providing a more secure and unassailable method of drug testing. The risk of adulteration, more prevalent in other testing methods, is substantially reduced with hair samples, ensuring reliable conclusions during evaluations.

This tamper-resistant feature upholds the integrity of the testing process, crucial for environments requiring trustworthy assessments. The inability to effectively alter hair samples ensures a high level of reliability, making it a preferable option for courts, employers, and other entities focused on upholding stringent drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
