Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hatfield, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty in hair testing is supported by centers located in cities across the nation. To perform a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

In past years, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle exams. Employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse experts now more often favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial use, and probation cases due to their extended detection window for drugs, which spans up to 90 days and is collected in a supervised manner, making deception nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extensive overview of alcohol and other substances by catching biomarkers in its growing strands. When obtained close to the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to alter, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be retrieved. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair; body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The foundational steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial conversion of a sample into a laboratory's process. This phase ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening signifies a prompt preliminary evaluation for illicit substances. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, positive screening results demand confirmation to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples indicating potential positives in Screening necessitate a further confirmation step.

When a sample returns a positive indication in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from the hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g. urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days as opposed to shorter detection windows in urine testing.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to bypass, ensuring results are more reliable.
  • Supplies historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug usage as opposed to only recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other detection methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
