In Hebron, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available nationwide. It's necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown, or body hair can also be used. Hair tests effectively screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other personalized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals frequently prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. These hair tests cater to employers with strict anti-drug stances, legal authorities, and probationers. With a detention window of up to 90 days, observed collections, and being nearly impossible to deceive, hair tests are preferred over urine tests, which remain effective for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 90-day window of detection for substances. Collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (resembling a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. Head hair signifies only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is divided into four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial sample processing into a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, providing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid evaluation for prohibited substances. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to stand in legal contexts. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is procured from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It enables identification of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Constraints:

  • Unable to detect recent activity: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
