Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing services for drugs in Helvetia, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities available in all cities across the nation to conduct these checks. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally required. These tests can be designed to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for various other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonly used for drug testing. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now require a hair drug test instead of the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and for individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair secures a lengthy record of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, it offers up to roughly a 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, making it hard to tamper with and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, added tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, it's specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data not entered electronically through a chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is budget-friendly to rule out drugs in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positive samples identified during Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This step involves isolating drugs from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive screening results. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Fraud resistance: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Long-term data: It can delineate a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Even though often named "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Helvetia, WI? The answer lies in its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests examine a longer time frame and are more resistant to tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
