Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Hingham, Wisconsin. Our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide, with centers ready to conduct tests in every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation monitoring. The main advantage is a 90-day detection period, with observed collections reducing the likelihood of tampering. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting very recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive overview of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of maturing hair. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both initial screening and follow-up confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding amount of body hair may be substituted. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. All other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result entails four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drug use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of cases, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from the hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples necessitate washing before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can pinpoint drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to manipulate, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insights: They can deliver a usage pattern spanning several months, not merely reflecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing in Hingham, WI, offers several distinct advantages. Primarily, hair tests allow for superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to urine tests.

While urine tests are common, hair follicle tests boast a longer detection window, drastically reducing the chance of evasion. These tests excel in providing employers and legal entities with a clear and unaltered understanding of an individual's substance usage history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hingham, WI, allows for drug detection over an extended period of up to 90 days. This widescale view equips employers with significant insights into a candidate's or employee's comprehensive substance use history.

Unlike urine tests, the extended detection period of hair testing encompasses a broader timeline, offering a more complete evaluation of long-term substance use and aiding in making informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hingham, WI, hair follicle testing is highly regarded for its resistance to tampering. This testing method greatly diminishes the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring results are trustworthy and credible.

Due to the inherent design of hair follicle tests, the opportunity for interference is minimal. This provides stakeholders with unquestioned results, reinforcing the integrity of the testing process and leaving little room for doubt.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
