Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hixton, Wisconsin. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, we are experts in hair testing; with centers across the nation, you can get tested almost anywhere. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from the head or body is required. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing choices.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over the usual urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationers often use hair tests. Its main advantage is the extended drug-use detection window of up to 90 days, granted through a supervised collection method that’s tough to falsify. However, for detecting use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the hair as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal a detection period of around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is uncomplicated, not easy to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or more than 10-panel tests, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair indicate only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s systems. Tasks include confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening consists of an initial examination for drug abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court use. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening demand extra confirmation.

For samples suggested as positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this process, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex method.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to fabricate: It is challenging to trick a hair drug test, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Historic data availability: Offers a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
