Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Horicon, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing, along with our nationwide facilities, ensures easy access to testing. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for particular testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing practices have leaned more towards employing hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over typical urine tests. This method benefits firms adhering to strict no-drug policies, court systems, and individuals on supervision. One major advantage of this test is its ability to detect drug use over a longer timeframe, often up to 90 days, through direct sample collection, making it virtually fraud-proof. Nevertheless, for recent drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. Only scalp hair refers to head hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in processing a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an introductory rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening economically addresses drug use elimination in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require additional verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards' accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Horicon, WI, the reasons Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing are clear. Hair testing stands out by offering better detection accuracy and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. It greatly surpasses other methods in its ability to detect substances accurately over an extended period. Extended Detection Window

The Extended Detection Window of hair follicle testing offers a unique advantage in Horicon, WI. While other methods fall short, hair testing can trace drug use for as long as 90 days. This extended timeframe grants employers a thorough review of an individual's substance use history, paving the way for better-informed hiring and management choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
