Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in How, Wisconsin. If you're looking for hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field and has centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly favored in drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests serve organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probationary monitoring. The main advantage of hair testing is it offers a longer detection period of up to 90 days. Moreover, it's conducted under supervision and is very difficult to falsify. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now considered an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged chronology of alcohol and other drugs through biomarkers absorbed in the structure of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable mass of body hair can be procured. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s management system. This process includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data that the electronic chain of custody system didn’t provide.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Any samples indicative of positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In case a sample shows potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than from other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of executing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and pursuant to ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine assessments which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Delivering historical data: It can furnish a sequence of drug usage over an interval, not just current usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
