Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hull, Wisconsin. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing's hair testing expertise is available with testing facilities located nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug testing. Employers, judicial bodies, and professionals in substance abuse often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These are chosen by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial authorities, and those on probation due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, monitored collection process, and difficulty in tampering. However, urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to about three months for substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of hair 1.5 inches long and consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) that is closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although screening is a cost-effective measure to rule out substance use for most samples, any positive result must be verified to be legally valid. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial collection is prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than found in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical use data: It can reveal usage patterns over time rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days post-drug use for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hull, WI, hair follicle testing is often favored over urine tests for its superior reliability. Hair tests detect a broader range of substances with greater accuracy. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair sampling eliminates many variables that could compromise results, providing a more trustworthy assessment of substance use.

This method offers substantial detection benefits over urine tests. Employers can rely on hair analysis to capture long-term drug use, while urine tests often miss drugs or are time-limited.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended drug detection period of up to 90 days in Hull, WI, providing a comprehensive substance use history. This wide detection window gives employers deeper insights into an individual's drug consumption over time, enhancing decision-making for recruitment or continuing employment.

This prolonged detection period far outstrips the capability of typical urine tests, which are limited to recent drug use. Hair testing thus presents a broader picture of potential substance abuse.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One key advantage of hair follicle testing in Hull, WI is its resistance to tampering. Hair samples are less susceptible to adulteration compared to urine samples, which can be more easily manipulated. This inherent security enhances the credibility and integrity of drug testing outcomes.

The method's robustness against interference ensures results are not only accurate but trustworthy, a necessity for employers and agencies aiming for dependable drug use assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
