What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a history of alcohol and other drug use, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected close to the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to three months for these substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length comprising around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) collected close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if required by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary quick examination for drugs. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for court admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive findings are washed as required before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Humboldt, WI surpasses traditional urine tests due to its high accuracy and reliability. These tests provide a comprehensive evaluation over extended periods, making it difficult to evade detection. With unparalleled precision, hair testing offers more reliable results compared to urine tests, which can be limited by shorter detection windows and greater susceptibility to tampering.

Employers in Humboldt prefer hair testing for its robust detection abilities, reinforcing drug-free policies with confidence. By offering a longer detection period, hair follicle tests give a clearer picture of an individual's substance use, something urine testing often cannot.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Humboldt, WI offers an extended detection window, often up to 90 days, providing a detailed view of drug use. This long span enables employers to gauge an individual's substance use history comprehensively, facilitating informed decisions.

With the ability to trace drug use over several months, hair follicle tests are invaluable for employers seeking a thorough understanding of candidate or employee substance habits, surpassing the shorter detection periods of other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing, implemented in Humboldt, WI, significantly minimizes tampering risk, ensuring trustworthy results. Unlike other testing forms, hair follicle samples are less prone to adulteration, safeguarding the integrity of the outcomes.
