Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Institute, Wisconsin. For those requiring a drug or alcohol screening via hair analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We have facilities nationwide equipped to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol, or be tailored for other requirements.

In recent developments, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Many companies, legal bodies, and addiction specialists now opt for this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are particularly favored by employers with strict drug policies, law courts, and probationary bodies. The main advantage lies in the extended detection time of up to 90 days, along with the monitored collection process that minimizes cheating. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use, within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a three-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For additional EtG tests or when testing surpasses 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When addressing head hair, this implies exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four foundational stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initiation of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This includes ensuring the sample was suitably sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening introduces a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to discount drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for courtroom suitability. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening do require subsequent verification.

In cases where a sample is considered presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at markedly lower concentrations than in different techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), affirming why hair drug screening is the most intricate technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in line with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Protracted detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, rendering the results more trustworthy.
  • Offers historical data: It can deliver a chronological pattern of drug usage over a timeframe, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses usually incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
