Located in Jordan, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing and nationwide centers ensure coverage everywhere. Typically, you need around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or body. Hair tests provide options to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom-tailored testing solutions.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug tests are more commonly employed for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for them over traditional urine tests. They're favored by zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probationary bodies. The key advantage of hair tests is the extended drug detection period, lasting up to 90 days, with secure collection, making tampering nearly impossible. For evaluating recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption over time. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands as they grow, providing a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be insufficient, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair is specifically scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment were proper, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial drug use check. It's cost-efficient for clearing non-positive samples. However, a positive must be confirmed for it to hold up in legal settings. Any presumptively positive result in Screening requires a follow-up confirmation.

Should Screening suggest a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the sample for Extraction. In this stage, hair releases drugs at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair testing complex.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, each step is under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with limited detection periods.
  • Challenges in deception: Cheating a hair test is notably tough, ensuring accurate outcomes.
  • Historic usage insight: Provides a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs need about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp-bound follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
