Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Kempster, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty lies in hair assessments, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Over the years, drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle drug testing. This method is preferred by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with no-drug policies, the court system, and those on probation due to extended drug use detection—up to 90 days. The collection is directly observed and difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for recent drug use—within five days—urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at far lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variances: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
