Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive hair follicle drug testing service in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. Whether you need a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these tests. We have centers across all major cities nationwide that can conduct hair testing. Typically, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for the test. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more integral to drug screening processes. Various employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. This test's major advantage is its extended detection window, revealing drug use from up to 90 days ago, obtained via an observed and secure collection method, and is exceedingly difficult to tamper with. However, for identifying drug use in the past few days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers trap biomarkers as the strand grows, providing a long-term history of alcohol and other drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, making it tough to tamper with and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. In our context, head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the lab’s system. This step covers ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry that is not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation to be considered admissible in court. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original specimen is collected and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening phase is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed when necessary. The end-to-end laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very hard to cheat, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can indicate a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a delay of approximately 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
