Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in King, Wisconsin. For those seeking drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization in hair testing plus our nationwide network of centers ensures access to testing no matter the city. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair required, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

Hair follicle testing has become a more popular choice over recent years, replacing standard urine tests as demanded by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Organizations adhering to zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs prefer this method for its extended detection window of up to 90 days, unique observance in collection, and resilience against tampering, though urine tests remain optimal for recent 5-day drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance usage by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 strands of hair (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't an option, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Outline

The principal stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for judicial acceptability. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests offering shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical insight: It tracks drug usage patterns over time, rather than capturing only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: A window of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing against traditional urine tests, the advantages are clear, especially in King, WI. The superior accuracy and reliability of hair testing stand out, given its ability to detect a wider range of substances over a more extended period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
