Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Knowlton, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities in all major cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is used. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach for substance testing. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over traditional urine testing. Their preference is driven by the test's extended detection window, about 90 days, and the difficulty in tampering due to the observed sample collection, making it almost tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis stands out as a significant method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands provide insights into long-term usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection timeframe of three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification tasks. It is advisable to use 150mg for tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be lacking, a similar volume of body hair can suffice. By head hair, we specifically mean hair from the scalp, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The central stages in the lab analysis process of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first integrated into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse substances. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation for court acceptance. Samples that test positive in Screening require subsequent verification.

For samples preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if needed. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test poses significant challenges, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage patterns: It offers an insight into a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent substance use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more compared to other drug test techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
