Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in La Grange, Wisconsin. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair analysis is unparalleled, with numerous centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed for testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence in drug testing procedures. Many employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse specialists now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and for those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, through a supervised collection process, making it exceedingly difficult to falsify. However, to detect drug use within the last 5 days accurately, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is easy, somewhat tamper-resistant, and straightforward to ship.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section from around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for initial testing and verification. For EtG, added tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen mass of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be procured, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair references all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory processing of a sample in a laboratory's system. This process confirms that the sample was adequately sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid review for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical measure to dismiss drug use in most samples, positive screening results must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional verification.

Presumptive positives in the Screening stage necessitate pulling more hair from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It can track a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Attributes such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
