In Lac La Belle, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our facilities span all major cities Nationwide, adept at conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have emerged as a more favored approach in drug screenings. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests over urine tests. This method suits workplaces with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal settings, and probation cases due to its extended 90-day detection window and nearly foolproof process. Nevertheless, urine tests remain precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers into the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer close to a 3-month detection timeframe for these substances. It is simple to gather, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair indicates any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of handling a sample within a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick check for the presence of drugs. While Screening is an economical method to disregard drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples marked as presumptive positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insights: It provides an account of drug use over a recent timeline, unlike tests that only capture recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days to establish.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and personal growth rates can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
