Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Laketown, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide to perform these examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body are needed. Hair tests allow for detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized upon request.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation services utilize hair tests due to their extended drug use detection capability, normally up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making tampering difficult. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal specimen for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring that the specimen was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample test as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, yielding more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can demonstrate a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent indulgence.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Laketown, WI, offers significant advantages over conventional urine tests. With superior detection accuracy and reliability, hair tests give employers better confidence in screening results. Unlike urine tests, which provide a narrower window of detection, hair testing can reveal substance use over longer periods, enhancing workplace safety and decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

In Laketown, WI, hair follicle testing is invaluable for its extended detection window, up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an employee's or candidate's substance use history, offering a more comprehensive perspective compared to shorter-term urine tests. The broader detection period supports informed decision-making in hiring and policy enforcement.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Laketown, WI, are designed to be tamper-resistant, significantly minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. This method ensures reliable results, providing employers and organizations with confidence that the integrity of the test is maintained. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
