Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug assessments in Lauderdale Lakes, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our company specializes in hair assessment and operates test centers nationwide capable of carrying out such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can be customized for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recent trends have seen a rise in preference for hair follicle drug screening in testing procedures. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. Such screenings are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial entities, and probationary cases. The main advantage is a detection window extending up to 90 days, an observed process preventing tampering, albeit urine tests remain most precise for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term substance markers by integrating them into the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug usage for a period of nearly three months. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hairs (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the head will yield 100mg, making it the best sample for initial tests and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, the same amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we pertain only to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair category (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing in the lab involves four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step where a sample enters the lab’s system, ensuring it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for drug presence. It is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples suggestively positive require further confirmation.

With any presumptively positive sample during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the collected sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at minute concentrations compared to different methods (e.g., urine or saliva), contributing to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of positive screenings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptively positive samples undergo washing if necessary. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing result fidelity.
  • Shows usage trends: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are often costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually pertains to the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
