Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing in Leland, Wisconsin. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is supported by testing centers located across all cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body hair can be used. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific customized testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more popular method for conducting drug tests. An increasing number of employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse experts are requiring hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. This method is chosen by those enforcing strict zero-tolerance drug policies, within court systems, and for individuals on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period for drug use, which usually spans up to 90 days, involves an observed collection process, and is very challenging to tamper with. Nonetheless, when it comes to identifying drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate substance use up to around a 3-month period for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, resists tampering, and is simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't an option, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step entails ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry that hasn’t been addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to eliminate drug use in most samples, to be valid in legal contexts, a positive screen must be verified. Any samples catching a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample reveal a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized for confirming any positive screening result. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: It is significantly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Historical data provision: It can display a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variation in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug substances in the hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair testing to the traditional urine tests in Leland, WI, hair follicle testing emerges as the superior choice. It offers unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. The benefits of this method significantly outweigh those of urine tests, making it an ideal choice for many situations where precise detection is key.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. In Leland, WI, this test can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, offering employers a comprehensive view of an employee or applicant’s substance history. This long detection window is invaluable for thorough assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
