Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Leroy, Wisconsin. If you require a test for substances or alcohol, we are experts in hair analysis, with locations across the Nation ready to carry out these tests. Hair on the crown or body, up to 2 inches, is generally necessary. Testing can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become a popular choice for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance drug policies and probation requirements. They advantageously offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are difficult to tamper with, though urine remains most reliable for recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands provide a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair's developing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair may reflect up to a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and easily transportable.

A sample of 200 hair strands, approximately 1.5 inches long (similar in size to a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, suitable for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing within a laboratory’s system, including verifying proper sample sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional entries required beyond those in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to stand in legal settings. Presumptive positive results in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to execute.

Confirmed positive results from screening undergo further analysis through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which feature a more limited timeframe of detection.
  • Challenging to tamper with: The potential to deceive a hair drug test is minimal, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • History of usage: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over an extended period, not limited to recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot measure recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Results can be influenced by hair color and individual differences in hair growth, impacting metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly misnomered as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines hair strands rather than scalp-embedded follicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
