Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lewiston, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair testing, with centers available across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing options.

In recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has increased for conducting drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now require hair drug tests in place of conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation programs due to their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, and nearly impossible to alter. However, for drug use screened within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now perceived as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair archives an extended history of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the layers of the hair strand. When taken from the scalp area, hair can offer a detection span of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not an option, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. For head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair extends to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. This entails ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive Screening samples do require secondary verification.

Should a sample suggest positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This process finds drugs within hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a wash as needed. The lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating challenges: It is very challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
