Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair strand drug evaluations in Little Grant, Wisconsin. Whether a hair drug or alcohol examination is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis and offers test sites in cities across the U.S. with the capability to perform hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body may be used generally. Analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug assessments increasingly involve hair follicle tests. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests instead of usual urine exams. These tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug use mandates, courts, and individuals on probation. A hair follicle test's main advantage is its ability to detect drug use over a prolonged period, usually 90 days, collected under supervision, and is very difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for determining substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying the consumption of substances such as drugs and alcohol. Hair can capture a prolonged history of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When strands are collected from near the roots, hair testing can reveal substance usage over a period of up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is quite challenging, and the samples are easily transportable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp results in about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair on an accurate scale. If head hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types like facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory method for processing drug test outcomes involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory system. This step verifies that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary additional data entry that isn't provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, any indication of drug presence must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample show positive preliminary results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample, prepared for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair, typically at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive results in the Screening stage are validated through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed prior to further confirmation, as necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests have a shorter time frame.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably tough, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Historical substance use: It conveys a timeline of substance consumption rather than just capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for detecting recent ingestion: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Varying outcomes: Differences such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the terminology "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the surface.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Little Grant, WI, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing through its enhanced accuracy and dependability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
