In Little Round Lake, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing. We feature testing centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is sufficient for most testing needs. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly incorporated into drug testing protocols. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this method over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal authorities, and probation cases. Its key advantage is the extended detection window, often up to 90 days. Conducted under observation, these tests are challenging to manipulate, though urine tests remain most accurate for recent usage detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained close to the scalp, it grants a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to manipulate, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp generates 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest measuring the weight of the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent portion of body hair may be taken. By head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab handling of a drug test result includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial enrollment of a sample into a lab’s system, verifying that it was sealed and dispatched correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, confirmation is necessary for any positive screen to hold up in court. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening are subject to further verification.

If Screening results are presumably positive, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, the drug extracts from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing more challenging.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples get cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The overall lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair tests are notably difficult to falsify, thus yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It offers a timeline of drug consumption, unlike methods that only reveal recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is generally pricier than alternative drug-testing methods.
  • Results variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
