Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lorain, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol assessment through hair testing, our company excels in this method and operates testing centers throughout cities across the nation that can administer such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or other body areas is required for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach in the field of drug testing. Many businesses, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of the typical urine tests. Employers who enforce stringent no-drug policies, courts, as well as those on probation, rely on hair follicle drug tests. One key advantage of this method is its extensive detection period, up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, and very difficult to evade. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding markers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present approximately a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It’s suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped accurately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening cost-effectively excludes drug use from most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample indicative of a positive result in Screening requires subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows potential positivity in Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive finding in screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples indicating potential positivity undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as required. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Chronological data: It can offer a timeline of drug use over an extended duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to indicate recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variances like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
