Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lowell, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, our centers are conveniently located in cities across the USA. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. Hair tests offer options to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly favored. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often choose hair testing over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential for zero-tolerance workplaces, the judiciary, or probation compliance. Their advantage lies in an extended detection window of up to 90 days, minimizing the chances of tampering through an observed collection process, even though urine tests remain best for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-standing history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG evaluations, additional screenings, or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The testing process in a laboratory for drug detection consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial-stage processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry that a digital chain of custody system may not cover.

Screening serves as a quick initial assessment for substance abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use across most samples, a positive result must be verified to hold up in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in this Screening step must go through further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is significantly lower than that in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to perform.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is handled using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug usage for as long as ninety days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Harder to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Shows usage patterns: It can present a usage timeline that spans a duration, rather than capturing only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require about five to seven days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Different factors, including hair color and variations in individual hair growth, can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
