Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Loyd, Wisconsin. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Optimal samples typically include 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Analyzing hair tests reveals details about drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing approaches.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method in recent times. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. It is especially favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection period of up to 90 days. Although urine tests are still the best for recent 5-day drug use, hair tests are nearly foolproof due to observed collection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can potentially offer a detection timeline for alcohol and drugs of up to 3 months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equal in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken from closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair not be an option, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we are exclusively referencing scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a confirmatory analysis.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why conducting a hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes a wash before confirmation if required. Both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards ensure review of the entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can depict a drug use pattern over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual distinctions in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
