Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lyndon Station, Wisconsin. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialized in hair testing. We have testing locations across all cities nationwide prepared to conduct a hair test. Generally, you need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body. Hair tests are capable of analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and professionals working with substance abuse now prefer a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal institutions, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is it allows for a prolonged detection period, potentially up to 90 days. The collection process is observable and virtually impossible to tamper with. However, a urine test remains the most accurate for drug use detected within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, a hair sample can offer up to an approximate 3-month period for detecting various substances such as alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results follows four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase of integrating a specimen within a laboratory’s framework. This process entails confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any supplementary data entry not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary, rapid evaluation for drug abuse signs. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use among most samples, a court-admissible positive screen mandates confirmation. Samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is notably demanding.

To verify any positive screening outcome, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed during Confirmation. Prior to Confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing as applicable. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Detected drug use can persist for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • High tamper resistance: The difficulty in altering hair drug test results augments result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: A period of 5-7 days is required before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Compared to other testing avenues, hair drug tests are generally pricier.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
