For thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Manchester, Wisconsin, turn to Accredited Drug Testing. Whether a hair drug or alcohol examination is needed, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by a network of testing centers across city lines nationwide. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, with body hair as an alternative. Tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and several custom options.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests has grown, often supplanting traditional urine tests in workplaces, courts, and amongst Substance Abuse experts. This method aligns with the zero-tolerance policies of many employers and the monitoring of individuals on probation. Its main advantage is a considerably longer detection window of nearly 90 days, collected in a methodic and observed way, making it highly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, urine tests still reign for screening recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for revealing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers in the growing strand's fibers. When hair near the scalp is collected, it can offer a detection timeframe up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When referring to head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with initial sample processing in a lab's system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a swift preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, however, a positive screen must be corroborated to be permissible in legal proceedings. Presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms with the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are very difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: They provide details on drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being named "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
