Accredited Drug Testing now offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Maplewood, Wisconsin. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise lies in this domain, and we have facilities throughout the nation, including all cities, to accommodate hair testing. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is necessary, although body hair is also suitable. These tests are adaptable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized inquiries.

The trend of drug testing in modern times has seen an increase in the adoption of hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug testing as opposed to the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases due to their extended detection window of approximately 90 days, the observation during sample collection, and their resistance to manipulation. For recent drug use detection within five days, however, urine tests maintain the highest precision.

What it is, How it works

As a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing has emerged prominently. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and other substances by seizing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Positioned near the scalp, hair delivers a detection span up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat immune to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample encompassing 1.5 inches, equating to roughly 200 strands (approximately a #2 pencil's thickness), near the scalp secures 100mg of hair, ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is advisable for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a matching quantity of body hair serves as an alternative. Note that head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure within a lab for handling a drug test result comprises four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into a laboratory's system. This stage includes confirming correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any supplementary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for abuse substances. Screening offers a budget-friendly option to dismiss drug usage for most samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court adherence. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Drugs are separated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are subject to washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug analysis identifies drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection duration.
  • Minimal risk of deception: Cheating a hair drug test proves exceedingly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It outlines drug consumption patterns over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing practices.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
