Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marquette, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required for testing. Various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized tests can be conducted using hair samples.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method of drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are particularly favored by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and those overseeing individuals on probation. The primary advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, overseen by observed collection, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, to detect recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding indicators in the strands of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece with roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use across the majority of samples, any positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lesser concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), leading to hair drug screening being one of the most challenging methods to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is utilized for Confirming any positive Screening results. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Cheating is tough: It is extremely difficult to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not just recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost Considerations: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result Variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Marquette, WI, offers numerous benefits over urine testing. Superior detection accuracy allows it to identify drug use over longer periods, surpassing traditional tests' reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
