Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mishicot, Wisconsin. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available in every city Nationwide. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required, but body hair may be used if necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers. The primary advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the go-to for recent drug use detection within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by entraping biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. It’s easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair comprises all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This step includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and appropriately sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positives during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variance: Hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair shaft, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
