Process Overview
The laboratory processes a drug test result through four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Confirmation for any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed,and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
