Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Moscow, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing excel in hair analyses and have facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the body or head is required. Our hair tests can screen drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized analysis options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has increased in recent times. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probation officers. A remarkable advantage of this method is its extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days. This method ensures sample integrity and is mostly foolproof, although urine tests remain preferable for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is regarded as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the growing strand of hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can supply up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. In terms of head hair, this specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's framework, ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for illegal substances. Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, but a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require a further confirmation step.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and arranged for Extraction. During this phase, substances are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation where necessary. The full laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a record of substance usage over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
