Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Nelsonville, Wisconsin. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with locations in every city across the country. Typically, hair from the head's crown of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, or body hair may be an option. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in drug testing methodologies. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers use hair tests because they offer a detection period of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drugs used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains biomarkers within its strands, offering a comprehensive long-term history of substance use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to approximately three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination of a drug test is divided into four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial registration of a sample into a lab’s database. It involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid initial assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive detection requires further confirmation to be valid for judicial matters. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this point, substances are isolated from hair with a reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive outcome from Screening is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair assessment can reveal drug use over 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • High accuracy: The difficulty of falsifying a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It illustrates a timeline of drug consumption, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
