Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Newton, Wisconsin. If a hair substance or alcohol evaluation is necessary, our expertise in hair screenings is unparalleled, with centers available in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient for testing. Our hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize these tests. The advantage of hair examinations is their extensive detection span, often up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, making them hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by storing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or when testing over 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, this pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps involved in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a quick preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples that are presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests which detect shorter windows.
  • Difficulty to falsify results: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: This method can show drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests cost more than most other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle found under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Newton, WI, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. The most distinct superiority lies in its ability to cover a wider detection window, extending up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter span provided by urine tests.
Reduced Tampering: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, providing reliable results even years after sample collection. This ensures employers get a clear view of substance use patterns.

When comparing detection accuracy, hair tests deliver results that are virtually cheat-proof due to their collection method, unlike urine tests that can be easily altered with substances or dilution.

Extended Detection Window

In Newton, WI, businesses benefit from the extended detection period offered by hair follicle testing. Unlike urine tests, which only identify recent usage, hair tests provide insight into an individual's substance history over 90 days.
Comprehensive View: This extended window allows employers to evaluate long-term substance patterns, aiding in better hiring and management decisions.

Detailed Records: Hair testing captures a more complete record of drug use, ensuring that employers are informed about any chronic patterns, making it an essential tool in maintaining workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Newton, WI, hair follicle tests offer a robust solution against tampering, ensuring résultat integrity. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are inherently tamper-resistant, as the samples cannot be easily manipulated or contaminated.
Sample Security: The collection is observed, reducing opportunities for adulteration and ensuring the authenticity of the results.

Trustworthy Outcomes: With the reduced risk of adulteration, hair testing provides reliable and credible results, establishing itself as a cornerstone for trustworthy drug testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
