Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Niagara, Wisconsin. Whether for drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis. We have centers nationwide ready to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for a thorough test. Analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer these tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation rely on hair tests for their extended detection period, typically up to 90 days. Conducted under observation, they are nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now embraced as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, making it the perfect sample for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or panels numbering more than 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair might be gathered. Specifically, head hair pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four central steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a rapid initial check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that show possible positive results in Screening require a further confirmation step.

If a Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As necessary, all samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidance and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration for detection.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely hard, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: Hair testing offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing strategies.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration found in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
