Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Nichols, Wisconsin. For those needing drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body suffices for the test. Options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored hair test solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug evaluations have become a preferred method over traditional urine tests by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Entities enforcing zero-tolerance policies often turn to hair tests due to their extensive detection period of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and high resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests maintain accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds an extended history of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (face, axilla, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires further confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

For samples initially positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Nichols, WI, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection and reliability. Unlike conventional urine tests, hair analysis offers extended detection periods, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This makes it a preferred choice among employers and professionals enforcing strict no-drug policies, ensuring a more thorough examination of substance abuse.

Hair testing’s meticulous approach reduces the potential for manipulation and offers a robust alternative to urine tests. Employers seek this option for its ability to detect long-term substance use, thus better supporting efforts to maintain drug-free work environments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests provide employers in Nichols, WI with insight into an individual's drug history spanning up to 90 days. This extended detection window is vital for thoroughly assessing an applicant or employee's drug use habits, offering a more comprehensive picture than traditional methods.

Contrast this with urine testing, hair analysis paints a broader timeframe, allowing companies to make informed decisions based on extensive historical data. This elongated window is essential for assessing long-term drug habits, thus enhancing workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Nichols, WI, hair follicle tests stand out for their tamper-resistant nature. These tests significantly reduce the chances of sample adulteration, ensuring that results remain credible and definitive. Hair testing's robust resistance to manipulation is why employers rely on it for verifiable results that withstand scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
