Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and boasts testing sites across all cities in the United States that can administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, obtained through an observed process that is difficult to compromise. Nonetheless, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has evolved into a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen weight. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. In this context, head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The principal phases in a drug test's laboratory process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the sample is securely sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug presence in most samples, results showing positive require confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that yield a positive indicator during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair in concentrations significantly lower than those in alternative methods such as urine or oral fluid, thus making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. Any samples that presumptively test positive undergo washing prior to confirmation, as needed. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: The difficulty of cheating a hair drug test enhances test result accuracy.
  • Chronological drug history: Capable of delineating a pattern of substance use over time, instead of solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color differences and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
