Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in North Freedom, Wisconsin. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialization lies in hair analysis. We boast testing locations in every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug detection. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor a hair drug test over typical urine screening. Hair follicle analysis is used by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The main advantage is extending the detection timeline for up to 90 days, gathered via an observed method, making it extremely difficult to falsify results. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, it offers a prolonged timeline for alcohol and drug usage history. When collected near the scalp, it can provide an approximate 3-month detection period for such substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We recommend measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This entails ensuring the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in different techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Perks of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is arduous, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal deviations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In North Freedom, WI, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Superior in reliability and accuracy, hair analysis extends the detection period dramatically, capturing drug use missed by urine tests. The hair test's unparalleled precision uncovers drug consumption in a way urine screening struggles to match, ensuring employers and authorities make informed decisions.

Beyond the extended detection window, hair tests are harder to manipulate than urine samples. This secure nature provides superior accuracy and reliability, crucial for maintaining robust drug-free policies and gaining a true understanding of an individual's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
