In Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our company excels in these tests, with facilities available nationwide, including every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can suffice. Hair evaluations can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for substance screening. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer it over traditional urine analyses. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle tests extensively. These tests offer the significant advantage of a prolonged detection window, often extending up to 90 days. Although ideal for long-term detection, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By retaining biomarkers in the growing strand fibers, hair reveals a long-term history of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can indicate alcohol and drug use spanning roughly a three-month period. It's easy to gather samples, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, additional panels, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a matching amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. It includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary manual data entry absent in an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a rapid initial examination for substance abuse. Although cost-efficient for dismissing substance use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is essential for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening demand a further confirmation.

For samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves retrieving drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher expenses than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In comparison to traditional urine testing, hair follicle analysis in Oak Creek, WI stands out for its enhanced detection precision. By capturing a longer history of substance use, hair testing offers a reliability that urine tests can lack. This level of accuracy ensures that the detection results are a true reflection of an individual's substance exposure over time.

Extended Detection Window

One of the major benefits of hair follicle testing in Oak Creek, WI is its extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive view into an individual's past substance use provides employers with the necessary insights to make informed decisions regarding their workforce's safety and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
