Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair testing services in Oostburg, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have centers across the nation equipped for these assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing requirements.

Recently, more organizations opt for hair follicle tests for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer these over typical urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and parole officers often use hair follicle tests. These tests allow for a 90-day drug use detection period, involve supervised collection, and are hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent consumption, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair can capture a long-term exposure history to alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the hair strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested to weigh the sample. If head hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we specify scalp hair only. Body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for obtaining drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system hasn't covered.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drug substances. Screening is an economical way to negate drug use on many samples, but courts require a confirmed positive screen for credibility. Any samples with a positive Screening result need further verification.

When a sample shows a preliminary positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those found in urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive result are washed before Confirmation as necessary. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection frame.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent behavior.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination looks at the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
