In Osborn, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair testing, with locations available in various cities across the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, either from the crown of the head or elsewhere on the body. These hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are essential for both zero-tolerance workplace policies and probation requirements. Their major advantage is a longer detection period, generally reaching up to 90 days, ensuring difficulty in tampering. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has risen as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of growing hair strands. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to an about 3-month period of detection for substances. The hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A lock measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 strands of hair (akin to a #2 pencil) from the scalp can provide 100mg, which is the optimal sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. In discussions of head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all remaining types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing of a substance test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's framework. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Screening is economically viable to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, but a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at drastically lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug testing represents the most complex methodology.

Verification of any positive screen result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples receive washing ahead of confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can uncover drug consumption for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter span.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is exceptionally tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Provides chronological data: It can portray a sequence of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incompetent in detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
