In Otter Creek, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, we provide drug and alcohol testing across nationwide centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair can be analyzed. Hair assessments include various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common for detecting drug use, preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over urine tests. This method benefits employers with zero-tolerance policies and the judicial system. It provides a detection window of up to 90 days, performed under observation, and is nearly infallible. Still, for evaluating recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair carries an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected close to the scalp, this method extends up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to ship.

A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and validation. To test for EtG, additional markers, or panels over ten, a specimen size of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair may be collected. In this context, head hair references scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other bodily hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes four key procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step involves verifying the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples preliminarily identified as positive in Screening demand further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging strategy to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positives are washed before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • High difficulty to compromise: Hair drug tests are highly secure against cheating, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: They can outline a pattern of drug usage over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to track recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", these tests specifically analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Otter Creek, WI, stands out by offering superior detection accuracy compared to urine tests. Hair tests provide a wider detection window that spans up to 90 days, effectively identifying drug use beyond recent weeks.

Employers benefit from this heightened reliability, maintaining drug-free environments. The longer detection period aids in evaluating long-term employee behavior, unlike urine tests, which primarily catch recent drug use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Otter Creek, WI, presents an extended detection window, capturing drug usage up to three months prior. This extensive timeframe offers employers a comprehensive understanding of an employee's or applicant's substance history.

This method is invaluable for sectors requiring high trust, portraying a complete picture of past drug use, whereas urine tests may only reveal recent activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
