In Owen, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing. Specializing in hair samples, we offer services across the nation, ensuring easy access in any city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for various tests, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored analyses.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common over the years. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse authorities prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method serves employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation. Its biggest advantage is the extended detection timeframe, reaching up to 90 days, with observable collection making it hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, for recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is uncomplicated to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. In reference to head hair, this pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system, which entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed as required before verification. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms urine testing in Owen, WI for numerous reasons. While urine tests excel in identifying recent substance use, typically within a 5-day window, hair tests offer a much more extended detection period. This longer range provides a more thorough overview of an individual's drug history, making hair testing a superior alternative for comprehensive analysis.

The detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests are unmatched in Owen, WI. They minimize the chance of manipulation or error compared to urine tests. Clients benefit from the heightened reliability of hair analysis, which bolsters its use in corporate and legal settings requiring detailed drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

In Owen, WI, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing surpasses traditional testing methods. This approach can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, providing employers with a detailed understanding of an individual's substance history. The extended detection period is crucial for making informed hiring decisions by presenting a comprehensive view of historical drug use.

The longer detection capability keeps organizations in Owen, WI informed about potential substance use over a more considerable period. This not only aids in maintaining a drug-free workplace but also supports informed decision-making by offering a more prolonged drug use timeline than alternative testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Owen, WI relies on the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing to maintain the integrity of its drug testing processes. This method significantly reduces the likelihood of sample tampering and ensures the reliability of results. Hair testing's resistance to adulteration means more accurate outcomes compared to more easily manipulated testing methods.

The reliable and incontrovertible results offered by hair follicle testing are a standout feature in Owen, WI. Businesses and legal entities prefer it for its authenticity and guarantee that samples remain unaltered. This bolsters confidence in the testing outcome, as tampering is effectively mitigated, preserving the integrity of the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
