For those in Patzau, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to, with specialized centers across the nation ready to administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from your head or body, with these tests capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance screening. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair tests instead of the usual urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests benefit employers who enforce no drug use policies, legal systems, and those on probation by providing extended detection periods up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, rendering them almost impossible to manipulate. Yet, for identifying recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. It provides a chronological record of substance exposure, capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When hair is cut close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-on panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for abused drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally valid. Any sample testing presumptively positive during Screening requires a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

To confirm any positive screening outcomes, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing if necessary before confirmation. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It displays a trend of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
