Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Pembine, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our test centers are located in cities across the U.S., providing convenient access for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body area is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair test options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug testing has surged for screening purposes. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly opting for this method over the traditional urine test. Employers upholding zero-tolerance policies and legal bodies value hair tests for their prolonged detection capability, lasting up to 90 days, with observations to prevent tampering. For drug use assessments within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a historical record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, the detection period extends up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches and roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If a scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where the sample is initially incorporated into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive finding must be validated for court acceptance. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original set for Extraction preparation. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodologically.

Confirmation of any positive Screen result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to tamper with: Manipulating results in a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the strands of hair, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine testing in Pembine, WI? Its unparalleled detection precision sets it apart. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair testing offers a higher accuracy rate, making it a superior choice for those seeking reliable and consistent substance detection outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
