Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing for Perry, Wisconsin residents. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty in hair testing coupled with nationwide centers ensures accessibility. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown of the head or body, and they can be examined for drug or alcohol/ETG use as well as other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for it over standard urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for those with zero-tolerance policies, legal mandates, and probation conditions. A notable advantage is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is difficult to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have evolved into an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When snipped near the scalp, hair can reflect up to about a 3-month detection span for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, harder to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For enhancements like EtG and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair denotes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In lab processing of drug test results, the primary steps include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system, consisting of verifying the sample’s seal and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not included via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial cursory evaluation for drugs of misuse. While a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most cases, any positive screen needs confirming to be legally viable. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Post a positive screening result, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration here than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening ranks as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples indicated as presumptively positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab procedure is assessed and adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is significantly challenging, hence enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a drug usage trend over a duration, extending beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become discernible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternate drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually investigates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
